    Dear EHS Members,

February will be a busy month. I am attending a meeting in Monaco next week and will present on periprosthetic infection and on how we should look at the health economics of our interventions; I will then be in Dublin for their Royal College of surgeons meeting on 13th Feb, in Madrid for the SECCA meeting (Spanish Society of Hip Surgery with EHS) hosted by Prof Eduardo Garcia-Rey and will finish the month at the SRS meeting in Japan.

EHS is honored to be the Guest Society at the British Hip Society’s annual congress in London in March and I look forward to seeing many members there. BHS President and EHS member, Prof Matt Wilson, addresses us below in readiness for the event.

As you know, Olympia is booked for our 17th EHS Congress London 2027, so the BHS meeting there will be a great chance to experience the venue, the atmosphere and to enjoy London in the Spring.

Thanks to Prof Bondarenko, Dr Meller and all our speakers who took part in the PJI International Meeting last month supported by EHS and in collaboration with the German Hip Society, presented by the Sytenko Institute for Spine and Joint Pathology, Ukraine and Charite Hospital, Germany. Even a blackout over Kharkiv during the meeting didn’t stop the show – evidence of our strong desire to improve hip knowledge across Europe and what a crucial role EHS has to play in spreading that far and wide.

The call for abstracts for the Stockholm combined meeting with The Hip Society in September is out. This is open to established consultants and we look forward to seeing your submissions. (Click here.)

Imminent courses with EHS support are the Bern Hip Symposium, SECCA as mentioned and, in April, the Barcelona Hip Meeting. Reports will follow. Meanwhile, please help to find contributors for a new survey for pelvic surgeons involved with high-energy pelvic fracture in young women. (See below.) And don’t forget to promote our free webinar replay of the BHS / EHS Webinar series to your colleagues.

Finally, we are very happy to welcome new faces to EHS: Young Members Mr Ian W Kennedy and Mr Matthew Kennedy, UK, Dr Joao Nobrega, Portugal and Dr Michael Axenhus, Sweden; and Full Members Dr Remzi Caylak, Turkiye, Mr Kartik Logishetty, UK and Prof Michael Morlock, Germany. Plus our new EHS EduCom member Mr Sujith Konan introduces himself HERE.

    With Best Wishes,

    Prof Fares Haddad
    EHS President 2025-2027

    BHS President

Dear Members of the European Hip Society,

On behalf of the British Hip Society (BHS), I am delighted to extend warm greetings to our colleagues and friends across Europe. The coming year presents an exciting opportunity to further strengthen the long-standing relationship between our two societies, united by a shared commitment to advancing hip surgery, education, research, and patient care across Europe and beyond.

The British Hip Society was established, in 1989, to promote excellence in the management of hip disorders through education, research, innovation and professional collaboration. Our membership includes orthopaedic surgeons, trainees, allied health professionals and researchers with a common interest in hip preservation, arthroplasty, trauma and revision surgery. Through scientific meetings, educational initiatives, guideline development, collaborative research and funded fellowships, the BHS aims to support best practice and foster continual improvement in outcomes for patients with hip pathology.

We are honoured that the European Hip Society will be our Guest Society at the BHS Annual Scientific Meeting in London this March (www.bhsmeeting.com) and we greatly look forward to welcoming EHS representatives to contribute to the programme, share European perspectives and engage with our members in discussion and collaboration. We hope this will be a highlight of the year and a catalyst for further joint initiatives.

The British Hip Society warmly invites members of the European Hip Society to join us as International Members and in the same spirit, we actively encourage our own members to engage with and join the European Hip Society, recognising the immense value of European-wide collaboration in education, research and advocacy.

We look forward with enthusiasm to the year ahead and to working closely with the European Hip Society to advance our shared mission. Together, we can continue to build a strong, collaborative community dedicated to improving hip care for patients across Europe.

    With kind regards,

    Matt Wilson
    President – British Hip Society

  • January 2026

    Dear EHS Members,

It was a privilege for me to represent the European Hip Society at multiple meetings in 2025.

I was delighted to be invited to Berlin to become an honorary member of The German Arthroplasty Society. This was beautifully hosted by Robert Hube and Georgi Wassilew with Carsten Perka, our EHS President Elect, coordinating some of the proceedings. It was an outstanding meeting. I had the opportunity to present two keynotes on robotics in arthroplasty surgery and on the evolution of THA surgery, and I had the great privilege of becoming an honorary member of The German Arthroplasty Society.

I was also on the organising committee and faculty of the Current Concept in Joint Replacement (CCJR) meeting in Orlando. This was without doubt the best CCJR for a few years. The meeting has grown and has tremendous energy. There was an intense, superb and very clinically practical programme with wonderful opportunities to network and interact with colleagues. I would encourage European Hip Society members to put this meeting in their diary for 9-12th December 2026.

Looking even farther ahead, EHS President Elect Prof Carsten Perka will be hosting our 18th EHS Congress in Berlin in 2029 and outlines his plans for EHS below. On our website you can see brief bios of most of our committee members, including Prof Perka HERE, EHS Treasurer Prof Tobias Winkler HERE, and new EHS EduCom member Prof Sebastien Lustig HERE.

Rather more imminent is the FREE PJI International Meeting on Monday 26th January @ 18:00-20:00 CET, supported by EHS and in collaboration with the German Hip Society, presented by the Sytenko Institute for Spine and Joint Pathology, Kharkiv, Ukraine and Charite Hospital, Berlin, Germany. Register HERE and spread the word.

Don’t miss our free webinar replay of the BHS / EHS Webinar series. Experts from both societies share their knowledge in a friendly atmosphere with interesting discussion of various tricky cases. Pick and choose what interests you from The Young Adult Hip, Complex Primary THA and Revision THA. And please spread the word on this too, so we can disseminate hip knowledge broadly.

We are happy to welcome new faces to EHS: Young Member Mr Humza Tariq Osmani from London, UK; Full Members Prof Louis Dagneaux from Montpellier, France, Dr Christian Hipfl from Berlin, Germany, Dr Pits Putzey from Luxembourg, Dr Jesse Walle Pieter Kuiper from The Netherlands and Dr Daniel Pfeufer From Munich, Germany; and finally International Member Prof Bill Walter from Sydney, Australia.

Also now available are all 496 abstracts from our 16th EHS Congress Thessaloniki 2026. Click HERE. Plus reports from our two recently sponsored events: the Portuguese O&T Society Congress 2025 (SPOT) (HERE) and the Osteoarticular Reconstructive Hip Surgery course in Madrid, Spain (HERE).

The New Year will be busy for me and for the European Hip Society and I look forward to meeting many of you and to continuing to foster the growth, visibility and impact of our society.

I would like to end this note by wishing each and every one of you an enjoyable festive period and health, happiness and success in 2026.

    With Best Wishes,

    Prof Fares Haddad
    EHS President 2025-2027

    EHS President Elect

New treatment approaches and new recommendations for the optimal therapy of diseases are emerging daily, often involving considerable costs, and require a reliable scientific basis for evaluation. We can only overcome this challenge by working together. Therapy recommendations that were correct 10 years ago need to be completely rethought today. For example, with the ever-increasing durability of endoprostheses, the importance of joint-preserving surgery on the hip joint has changed, but it is undoubtedly still extremely important.

We have also learned that treatment methods cannot simply be transferred between countries; different approaches have led to different decisions about what is the optimal treatment for patients.

So my goals as president of the EHS are threefold:

First, I want to support bundling European scientific knowledge to further strengthen our society’s self-confidence on the international stage. Second, we have to develop more intensive International cooperation with North America as well as Asia. Rapidly developing countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea need more attention.

Third, we need to develop new young hip surgeons. This should be achieved through fellowships at renowned European hip centres and structured educational courses for systematic improvement of knowledge across EHS member countries.

I want to work together with you to make the EHS more and more attractive and visible, especially for these younger colleagues. To achieve this, I want to work closely with the current President Fares Haddad, the Executive Committee, and with National Reps and all Members of the Society.

  • October 2025

    17th EHS Congress Thessaloniki 2025

Makedonia Palace Congress Centre, Thessaloniki, Greece, 16-17th October 2025

    General Assembly: 16th October 2025 @ 17:50-19:00 in Alexander I Hall

    Dear EHS Members,

With two weeks to go until I welcome you all to my hometown for our 17th EHS Congress Thessaloniki, this is my outgoing newsletter as EHS President before I hand over the reigns to our incredibly competent President Elect, Prof Fares Haddad.

It has been my honour to lead this specialty society, and EHS means very much to me – I served as Secretary General previously, so have been involved in the EHS board for a decade and have helped push the society to grow in strength, focus and scientific level.

Personally, I am proud to have opened EHS up over these years to new fresh members and move away from the idea of EHS as a closed group of old friends. We currently stand at 520 members from 56 countries worldwide and have an unprecedented number of International Members, with 30 North American members alone – as you know, USA is our Guest Nation this year. This broad membership pool is essential for a vibrant exchange of the latest ideas in hip surgery from around the world, with discussion and debate from the experts and leaders in our field, ensuring we keep focused on our shared EHS mission of improving care for our hip patients by being amongst the most outstanding specialty societies in Europe.

I am excited therefore to leave behind a legacy in the name of a new International EHS Fellowship in collaboration with the Japanese Society for Replacement Arthroplasty, which I hope to be approved at the General Assembly. This will offer an amazing opportunity for two senior EHS members to travel to Japan every other year, visiting at least four top hip centres over two weeks, while on alternate years, we will host two Japanese Fellows here in Europe.

Also at the GA we will approve our candidate for President, Prof Carsten Perka, and vote for Secretary General between two candidates, Prof Stanislav Bondarenko and Prof Moussa Hamadouche. We are delighted to announce our candidate for the role of EHS Treasurer: Prof Tobias Winkler. Please scroll down to read their CVs and mission statements ready to cast your vote in a fortnight, as well as the GA Agenda.

Meanwhile, we welcome new EHS faces this month: Full Members Mr Fiachra Rowan from Ireland and Dr Lucia Sanchez-Cozar from Spain, Young Member Dr Giuseppe Martello from Italy and International Member Prof Abhay Elhence from India.

Finally, Prof Haddad introduces our new collaboration with BHS for a webinar series (below) starting in one week, on 7th October. Save the date also for the Barcelona Hip Meeting 27-29th April 2026, called “New Times New Rules!” with EHS patronage.

See you all here in Thessaloniki very soon.

    Best regards,

Kicking off with the Young Adult Hip, the launch BHS – EHS Webinar is on Tuesday 7th October at 21:00-22:00 (CET). The format will be lively case discussions of alternative treatment options between pairs of BHS and EHS experts.

Chairs for this first webinar are Ajay Malyvia from BHS and Oliver Marin-Pena for EHS, with Vikas Khanduja & Nicolas Bonin, Geraint Thomas & Athanasios Papavasiliou. It will be a great privilege to serve the European Hip Society as President and to help strengthen education, research, and communication in hip surgery in Europe. My surgical practice is focused on hip surgery, covering all the fields of hip joint preservation (osteotomy, surgical hip dislocation, all kinds of soft tissue procedures) and an increasing number of primary hip arthroplasty and complex THA revisions.

My CV spans more than 550 peer-reviewed publications, and I have a strong track record in leadership nationally in Germany (German Arthroplasty Society, German Orthopedic Society) and internationally. In addition, I am the chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Arthroplasty Registry (EPRD) as well as the Steering Board of AO Recon. I have excellent contacts worldwide and will bring many options for collaborations to the European Hip Society.

My  goals as president of the EHS are threefold. First, we should bundle European scientific knowledge to further strengthen our society’s self-confidence on the international stage. Second, we have to develop more intensive International cooperation with North America as well as Asia. Rapidly developing countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea need more attention.

Third, we need to develop new young hip surgeons. This should be achieved through fellowships at renowned European hip centers and structured educational courses for systematic improvement of knowledge across EHS member countries. We have to make the EHS more attractive and visible, especially for these younger colleagues. To achieve this, I would like to work closely with the Executive Committee and with National Reps and  all Members of the Society.

I would be very honored if the members would elect me as the future president of EHS.

Building on my experience from the first term as Secretary General and with renewed determination, I propose the following development priorities for EHS:

    1. Expanding EHS Membership and representation in Europe

Current status: 14 / 44 European countries are not yet EHS members; 4 EHS member countries lack Nat Reps.

    Planned actions:

    • Personally engage with leading orthopedic communities in non-member countries through bilateral meetings and invitations to EHS events
    • Promote EHS visibility through scientific collaboration and media outreach, using platforms I already influence as editor and advisor
    • Develop a regional ambassadors programme to establish new Nat Reps where absent

Below are the declarations from our candidates for EHS ExCom positions: President and Secretary General

TO REGISTER FOR THE EHS CONGRESS, CLICK HERE

    Dear EHS Members,

Just seven weeks until I will welcome you all to Thessaloniki to enjoy our 16th EHS Congress 2025 (16-17th October), which has been awarded 14.0 European CME credits. The programme is wonderful and you can enjoy it HERE, exploring top talks from the very best hip experts in the field on our main topics of Revision, Fracture & Complication, Preservation, Primary and Technology.

During the Opening Ceremony, we will briefly step outside science as our distinguished EHS Member, Dr Hiroshi Fujita, introduces Nihon Hidankyo (The Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organisations), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024 “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again”.

I am pleased to name him one of three Presidential Guest Speakers at the congress, along with Prof Carsten Perka (Germany) and Prof Ran Schwarzkopf (USA). Additionally, as a symbol of the strong links EHS would like to keep with Japan (who was Guest Nation at our last congress) and our Japanese orthopaedic colleagues, Dr Fujita and I have created a proposal for an annual Senior Fellowship between EHS and JRSA (Japanese Society for Replacement Arthroplasty), which we will introduce to you at the EHS General Assembly (Thursday 16th October 2025 @ 17.50 – 19.00).

Following this, we will approve our candidate for EHS President 2027-2029, Prof Carsten Perka, as well as vote for EHS Secretary General 2025-2029 between two candidates: Prof Stanislav Bondarenko (who is running for a 2nd term) and Prof Moussa Hamadouche. Please see their letters of intention and CVs below. Plus we will appoint a new EHS Treasurer, as Prof Martin Thaler steps down. Thanks to him for his work over the years.

Other news: EHS is enormously proud of the ICM meeting’s great success in Turkiye this year and Prof Javad Parvizi, founding member and longterm EHS Member, gives us a nice account below, with a click to his synopsis. You can also see him in the replay of our last two EHS Webinars, giving brief summaries (here). We will continue to support and follow this excellent initiative.

Looking ahead to next year, we have added two events to our EHS Hip Events Calendar: the Bern Hip Symposium (5-7th February 2026), an EHS-Organised Course, and the 9th FORTE Magna Graecia Summer School (8-12th June 2026) taking place in Catanzaro, Italy, with EHS Patronage as usual.

Finally, we get to know our SciCom member Prof Nicolas Reina (France) a bit better in our Hip Case Q&A below, as well as welcoming our five new EHS members this month: young member, Mr James Miller (UK), along with full members: Mr Nicolas Bonin (France); Dr Tobias Buehler (Switzerland), Miss Kathryn Gill (UK) and Dr Konstantinos Kateros (Greece).

    Best regards,

    Prof Eleftherios Tsiridis

    Candidate for President
    2027-2029Click for CV

    2. Engaging and supporting young surgeons

Current status: Only 8% of EHS members are young professionals (under 35).

    ICM’s 3rd meeting was a great success!

The 3rd International Consensus Meeting (ICM) was held in Istanbul recently. Over 1,100 delegates from 100 countries travelled to participate in the three-day event. Experts from orthopaedics, infectious disease, scientists, and various disciplines gathered to debate and deliberate on over 350 questions/topics related to infection in orthopedics.

The process of ICM had started two years earlier when 8-10 delegates were assigned to each question to conduct a comprehensive systematic review/meta-analysis related to each topic. On the day of meeting, the lead delegate (liaison) for each question presented their findings followed by discussions. Scientific, insightful, and at times, passionate discussions on each topic occurred prior to voting.

The proceedings of the meeting and presentations (together with the voting results) are all posted on the ICM website (www.ICMortho.org). The documents will be published in the Journal of Arthroplasty and other peer-reviewed journals shortly.

The meeting was a resounding success by all measures. The local organizing committee had done an amazing job of hosting this in the beautiful city of Istanbul. No details were overlooked, and the Turkish hospitality was evident every step of the way. Each delegate took time away from their work and families to travel at their own cost to the meeting and sit through eight hours of meeting for three days. ICM is proud to have delegate members who have demonstrated prodigious dedication and devotion to patient care.

Please see a Synopsis of the ICM meeting as PowerPoint or PDF.I would say osteoarthritis in adults et very active patients but I do only hips so many surprising cases as well.I treat large acetabular defects in revision THA with custom made implants. It’s known now as accurate and reproducible, but I had this case where the implants could not fit not because of the shape but because of bone quality. I had to go back to classical techniques with cages and large implants. Always have a plan B.Very young consultant just after fellowship. An irreducible transverse acetabular fracture. A nightmare. 6 hours. Not a procedure for newbies.I remember the case of a young girl, she was 14 with achondroplasia. She was in so much pain and no one accepted to operate for a THA. I remember her father in tears because he suffered the same way and waited until his 50’s before the surgery. I did a sequential bilateral THA. It wet very well. She is living a normal life and I have so much pleasure seeing her in clinic since then to tell me about her new job, new boyfriend, new life.I operated on a former pro sportsman three months ago, who just texted me a video of him wakeboarding. Not that I recommended that, but I indeed said, do what you want… It’s difficult to advocate for mobility and sport and still be anxious when patients go wild. Not one specifically. But many focusing on the patients. The perspectives opened by the new scores, the new tools to acquire data in real life are so exciting.I love sailing and skiing. But good moments with friends and family are key for a good life balance.Corsica and Sardinia.

    A word on Greek wine

Thessaloniki, part of Central Macedonia, has a rich terroir and winemaking heritage, benefitting from its Mediterranean climate and balanced by plentiful and refreshing sea breezes from the Thermaikos and Strymonikos gulfs. The diverse terrain, including lakes and hills, creates ideal conditions for multiple grape varieties.

But… aside from the usual grapes famous worldwide, such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for whites, and Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Suavignon for reds, are you familiar with these Greek white grapes grown in Thessaloniki: Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Roditis? And these reds: Xinomavro, Limnio, Agiorgitiko?

If you only have time to explore one, Malagousia has an interesting story: in brief, the grape was resurrected from near extinction in the 1970s when a Professor of Oenology Vassilis Logothetis became interested in it and his student, local wine maker Vangelis Gerovassiliou, experimented with cultivation with amazing effect: he brought the grape back to life and into mainstream wine making.

Today Malagousia is hailed a world class grape. It produces highly expressive wines with complex aromas of flowers, white-fleshed fruits like peach and pear, citrus, and herbs, making it a favourite for both dry and sweet wine. Cheers! Or as the Greeks say, Geia Mas! (To Our Health!)

Clinical Trial ABOGRAFT (Antibiotic Impregnated Bone Graft)

We are pleased to introduce this prospective, multicenter, international double-blind randomized clinical trial aimed at preventing prosthetic joint infections (PJI) in patients undergoing hip replacement involving bone grafting. The study evaluates whether adding vancomycin and tobramycin to morselized bone grafts reduces infection rates compared to standard saline-treated grafts. As local antibiotic prophylaxis via bone cement has been shown to halve infection rates, ABOGRAFT investigates whether bone grafts can provide similar protective effects in complex hip reconstructions where biological fixation with bone grafting is required.

Importantly, the trial has received approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), meaning central regulatory clearance is in place—significantly facilitating participation from centers across EU member states. Each participating site is expected to recruit more than 20 patients annually. The study is currently active at seven Swedish centers and expanding internationally.

An announcement regarding a Principal Investigator (PI) meeting during the upcoming EHS Congress in Thessaloniki will follow shortly. We warmly welcome interest from colleagues across Europe who are engaged in complex hip arthroplasty and share our goal of advancing infection prevention through evidence-based innovation. My practice is solely hip replacement related so I see many patients with hip arthritis, but over a very wide age range, with a variety of hip concerns and with a number of possible solutions and options. That’s the fun of hip surgery!!! Unfortunately, I also get referred a number of patients with failed, or unhappy hip replacements. That’s where experience and an understanding of the complexity of revision surgery is important.Probably the most interesting cases are those that require customised implants. Planning with the engineers to reconstruct or bypass areas of bone loss in revision or looking to optimise hip biomechanics in complex primary surgery, is a challenge. The process when planned and delivered carefully, makes for successful outcomes and happy patients. I suspect these are some of the more difficult cases, but also the most rewarding!!

I don’t dread any surgery. I am old and experienced…
I am sad to see disappointed or unhappy patients, particularly when their expectations of our surgery have not been met.

I read journals and travel to meetings looking to keep up with all the important research work around my practice. I wouldn’t pick out one piece of excellent work over many others. With regard to our own work, I am particularly proud of the work we have done with our EMSON network. I hope our Bone & Joint Journal paper (HERE) showing improved outcomes in revision surgery in our region, after we introduced the Network process has been a helpful message.Away from the OR, I like spending time with my wife and four daughters. I enjoy walking, watching all sport and am passionate about my garden. We grow a lot of the food we eat which is fun. This year we have travelled to explore Oman and have spent a week relaxing by the coast in Turkey. Travelling and spending evenings with friends and family on holiday, makes all the hard work we do worthwhile!!

    It’s all Greek to me

It has been claimed that as many as 150,000 words in Modern English have their roots in the Ancient Greek. By some calculations, that’s 30% of the English language! 5% of these words are directly borrowed from Greek, while another 25% are borrowed indirectly, mainly through Latin. French, Italian, Spanish and German also feature many Greek words.
Greek remains a language which greatly enriches international scientific discourse; more than any other, it is the language which developed, shaped and expressed the beginning of most scientific theories, philosophical thoughts, and literature in most of the modern-day languages of the Western world.
Mr Zolotas (director of the Bank of Greece ) showed this off very nicely when he gave a speech in 1959 to an International banking audience in English using almost all Greek words, to emphasize the wealth of the Greek language and the fact that countless Greek words enrich English.

    Mr Zolotas’ English-Greek speech

“It is Zeus’ anathema on our epoch and the heresy of our economic method and policies that we should agonize the Skylla of nomismatic plethora and the Charybdis of economic anaemia.
It is not my idiosyncrasy to be ironic or sarcastic but my diagnosis would be that politicians are rather cryptoplethorists. Although they emphatically stigmatize numismatic plethora, they energize it through their tactics and practices. Our policies should be based more on economic and less on political criteria. Our gnomon has to be a metron between economic strategic and philanthropic scopes.
In an epoch characterized by monopolies, oligopolies, monopolistic antagonism and polymorphous inelasticities, our policies have to be more orthological, but this should not be metamorphosed into plethorophobia, which is endemic among academic economists.
Numismatic symmetry should not antagonize economic acme. A greater harmonization between the practices of the economic and numismatic archons is basic.
Parallel to this we have to synchronize and harmonize more and more our economic and numismatic policies panethnically. These scopes are more practicable now, when the prognostics of the political end economic barometer are halcyonic.
The history of our didimus organization on this sphere has been didactic and their gnostic practices will always be a tonic to the polyonymous and idiomorphous ethnical economies. The genesis of the programmed organization will dynamize these policies.
Therefore, I sympathize, although not without criticism one or two themes with the apostles and the hierarchy of our organs in their zeal to program orthodox economic and numismatic policies.
I apologize for having tyranized you with my Hellenic phraseology. In my epilogue I emphasize my eulogy to the philoxenous aytochtons of this cosmopolitan metropolis and my encomium to you Kyrie, the stenographers.”
(Mr Zolotas died in 2004 at the age of 100.)

    EHS Webinars Replay

  • July 2025

    Dear EHS Members,

Just over 100 days until I have the honour to welcome you to my home town of Thessaloniki for our 16th EHS Congress 2025 (16-17th October). We added some info on Mounts Olympos and Athos below to get you in the mood for visiting this stunning region of Greece. Thank you for all the abstracts we received, which are going through the final judging process now.

Lyon was the venue for EFORT this year and the city was in full summer mode. Our EHS session was a great success, thanks to all who attended; please see our report and a few photos HERE. We also held a friendly face to face meeting, introducing our new committee members; scroll below to see our nice Q&A session with Prof Pascal Kouyoumdjian (France) and Prof Olof Skoldenberg (Sweden), where we get to know two of our new SciCom members a little better.

We wish a warm welcome to our six new members, and are pleased to add Thailand to out list of International Member countries. Dr Panuwat Silawatshananai, we look forward to exchanging hip information with your country. Joining as Young Members are Dr Thomas Leung Ka Chun from Hong Kong and Mr Lenart Zore from Slovenia. New Full Members are Prof Marko Ostojic from Croatia, Dr Ibrahim Tuncay from Turkiye and Prof Tobias Winkler from Germany.

Our EHS Webinar on Revision THA last week was vibrant as usual and culminated in a crossfire on Custom 3D-Printed Implants for Massive Bone Loss between Prof Nicolas Reina (for) and Prof Luigi Zagra (against). Catch the free replay soon. Plus, the report is in (HERE) from the Sytenko Institute’s conference last month in Bukovel, Ukraine, with EHS patronage; a great opportunity to connect with Ukraine’s orthopaedic community, as well as anaesthesiologists and psychologists.

I wish everyone a great July.

    Best regards,

    Prof Eleftherios Tsiridis
    EHS President 2023-2025
Total hip arthroplasty remains the most frequent indication in my practice, particularly in complex cases such as dysplastic hips, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, or in patients with spinal deformities, unbalanced spine or with residual post fusion deformity. I am also increasingly involved in revision procedures and robotic-assisted surgeries, which now account for a significant share of my caseload.Beyond complex revision THAs involving bone loss, pelvic discontinuity, or post-traumatic and developmental anatomical deformities, the most interesting case this year was the treatment of a congenital hip dislocation previously managed with conservative surgery in childhood. A robotic-assisted primary THA was performed. Thanks to personalised 3D planning and robotic assistance, the implant was optimally positioned despite the altered anatomy, resulting in an excellent functional outcome.Probably the most challenging case of my career was a revision THA fixed in place by a large periarticular osteoma in the context of chronic sepsis. The procedure required a dual surgical approach to safely release the joint, followed by combined acetabular and femoral reconstruction. The complexity was both technical and strategic due to major soft tissue damage and residual infectious risk. The most enlightening and rewarding case was the management of a patient with hip osteoarthritis in the context of a selective myopathy of the trunk extensors. This neuromuscular condition had led to a severe sagittal spinal deformity with camptocormia and a previously failed spinal fusion. The patient underwent a complex three-stage surgical strategy: first, a two-step spinal fusion combining an anterior approach with ALIF at L4-L5 and L5-S1, followed by a pedicular subtraction osteotomy (PSO) with extensive correction and extension of instrumentation up to T4 with iliac fixation. This was subsequently completed by a total hip arthroplasty using a dual mobility cup implanted at 40° of inclination. The overall goal was to restore sagittal alignment and upright posture. This case stands as a clear illustration of how both spine and hip surgical background and individualised surgical planning can restore both function and posture in highly complex clinical scenarios.I particularly dread post-infectious sequelae cases, most often following repeated episodes of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). These patients have often undergone multiple prior revisions, resulting in severe acetabular bone loss, compromised pelvic fixation, and — most critically —extensive damage to the abductor mechanism and surrounding soft tissues. In such scenarios, traditional reconstructive principles are undermined: surgical planes are distorted, tensioning is ineffective, and the stabilising muscular envelope is no longer functional. The risks of instability, mechanical failure, and unsatisfactory outcomes remain high despite careful planning and the best surgical intent. These are the most humbling and demanding cases we face as reconstructive hip surgeons. One of the most insightful articles I read this year was published in The Bone & Joint Journal and focused on the use of machine learning to predict the risk of instability after total hip arthroplasty based on spinopelvic parameters.

Is it feasible to develop a supervised learning algorithm incorporating spinopelvic mobility to predict impingement in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty? Bone Jt Open. 2024 Aug 14;5(8):671–680.

It offered a compelling perspective on how artificial intelligence could be integrated into preoperative planning to support individualised implant positioning and risk stratification. As someone deeply involved in robotic-assisted surgery and kinematic alignment, I found the potential synergy between data science and surgical decision-making particularly inspiring.

Given my specific areas of interest and our current research focus on THA functional positioning the integration of complex lumbopelvic kinematic data into 3D planning and robotic surgery, this article aligns perfectly with our priorities and ongoing studies. There’s a certain ambivalence in how I spend my time outside the operating room — no doubt influenced by the pace and demands of our profession. On one hand, I tend to maintain a high level of activity through sports and other dynamic pursuits, a natural extension of the intensity of surgical life.

On the other hand, I have a deep affinity for all forms of art — particularly music, painting, and literature. These interests allow me to step away from a world that is often driven by precision, logic, and pragmatism, and to reconnect with a more emotional, introspective, and balanced dimension. Whether it’s through silence, artistic contemplation, or reading, I find a quiet counterpoint to the technical rigour of daily practice. This summer, I’ll be travelling to Peru and Bolivia with my wife and our three children. These holidays are above all a cherished opportunity to come together as a family and share meaningful experiences away from daily routines. We’re particularly drawn to Latin America — its rich cultures, diverse landscapes, and unique ways of life. Exploring South America as a family allows us to reconnect with one another while discovering new perspectives that go far beyond the geographical journey.Hip revisions — typically acetabular and/or stem revisions. The majority fall somewhere between Paprosky 2B and 3A. We rarely see 3B/C or true pelvic discontinuities. So, in short: revision surgery is my daily bread.Just last week, I operated on a 31-year-old patient with the largest native-hip synovitis I’ve ever encountered — a PVNS that had been slowly and silently eating away at the joint for years. A mix of patient and doctor delay. Fascinating pathology and challenging surgery.I can’t name just one, but successfully managing chronic hip infections — especially when the patient has endured multiple failed treatments — is always immensely rewarding. Seeing them walk away pain-free after such a long journey is a great feeling. Those same chronic infections! Whether it’s a one- or two-stage revision, they’re technically and emotionally challenging for everyone involved.I’ll have to get back to you on that — a few are bookmarked, and I want to do them justice.Building and creating — houses, gardens, outdoor spaces. And when winter comes: skiing, preferably off-piste.We’ll stay at our country house north of Stockholm, and also plan a week of hiking up north — Abisko and hopefully into Sarek. It’s true wilderness, with reindeer, the midnight sun, and blissfully no phone signal.

    Thessaloniki, Greece: calling mountain lovers!

Did you know that Greece, or Hellas, is the third-most mountainous country in Europe, coming after Norway and Albania?

Macedonia, the region of our congress, is home to two world renowned peaks.

    Mount Olympos

Mount Olympus, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (left: 2,917m / 9,570 ft; the highest mountain in Greece; 1hr from airport), famous throughout history as the home of the 12 Olympian gods in Greek mythology. Can you name them? (If not, see below.) Trekking and/or climbing are of course very popular with trails of various difficulty leading to the summit, “Mytikas”.

    Mount Athos

Mount Athos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (right: 2,033m / 6,670 ft; 2hrs from airport) is a peninsula jutting out into the Aegean Sea, known all over Greece as the “Holy Mountain” and famous for its monastic community. Did you know? Mount Athos is an autonomous region within Greece, governed by the monastic community and under the jurisdiction of the “Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople”? Yep. Fact.

    Halkidiki

Our congress is an hour from the incredible beach-haven region of Halkidki, where three peninsulas boast 500km+ of Aegean coastline. The Newsletter’s main photo above is from Halkidki.

    The ancient gods

    1. Zeus: King of the gods, god of the sky and thunder.
    2. Hera: Queen of the gods, goddess of marriage and childbirth.
    3. Poseidon: God of the sea.
    4. Dimitra: Goddess of agriculture.
    5. Athena: Goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare.
    6. Apollo: God of music, arts, knowledge, healing, plague, prophecies, poetry, and archery.
    7. Artemis: Goddess of the hunt, wilderness, wild animals, the Moon, and archery.
    8. Ares: God of war.
    9. Aphrodite: Goddess of love and beauty.
    10. Hephaestus: God of fire, metalworking, and crafts.
    11. Hermes: Messenger of the gods, god of commerce, thieves, and travelers.
    12. Hestia: Goddess of the hearth and home, who some say relinquished her throne for Dionysus: God of wine, festivals, and ecstasy.

Getting in the mood for our 16th EHS Congress Thessaloniki?

    Ancient Greek demigod, Heracles

Visible across the gulf from our seafront congress in October this year, as you will see, is Mount Olympos, home to the Greek deities. One of the most famous is of course Hercules, known in Greek as Heracles. He symbolised strength, courage, and heroic endeavor.

His famous 12 tasks (for Eurystheus) were:

    1. to kill the Nemean Lion
    2. to kill the Lernaean Hydra (a gigantic, nine-headed water-serpent, which haunted the swamps of Lerna, as pictured above)
    3. to capture the Ceryneian Hind
    4. to capture the Erymanthian Boar
    5. to clean the stables of Augeas in one day
    6. to kill the Stymphalian Birds
    7. to capture the Cretan Bull
    8. to steal the Mares of Diomedes
    9. to steal the girdle of the queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta
    10. to steal the cattle of the monster Geryon
    11. to steal the Hesperidean Apples
    12. to capture Cerberus, guardian of the Underworld

Abstract submission for 16th EHS Congress Thessaloniki 16-17 October 2025 open now! Deadline 10th April 2025

    Dear EHS Members,

First up, a polite reminder of these two important calls:-

    • Applications for EHS President and EHS Secretary General. Deadline 31st May 2025
    • Abstracts for our 16th EHS Congress in Thessaloniki 2025 (16-17th October). Submit HERE. Deadline 10th April 2025

I’m pleased to report the excellent scientific programme for our congress is complete and is star quality, as always, encouraging debate over diverse case studies for attendees to learn from the real life experience of our top EHS experts.

A new initiative this year lead by the EduCom is a session for Best National Papers, for which EHS Nat Reps have been invited to send in the top papers from their annual congress. We will of course also hold our usual awards in collaboration with Hip International for Best and 2nd Best Poster. All judged by the SciCom.

March started with a rainy AAOS meeting in San Diego, California, and followed with a sunny London Hip Meeting, co-chaired by Prof Fares Haddad (EHS President Elect) and Prof Henrik Malchau. At both events I had the opportunity to introduce the STAR approach (Superior Transverse Atraumatic Replacement), my minimally invasive surgical technique prioritizing patient outcome by reducing trauma and increasing speedy recovery, plus better joint function. Next I spoke at the 44th Israel Orthopaedic Association meeting in Tel Aviv.

April sees an EHS Session at the Turkish Arthroplasty Society’s congress for the first time, then in May we give EHS patronage to FORTE Summer School in Split, Croatia, the congress of Practical Course Orthopedics in Tolouse and a hybrid course on THA & TKA in Kharkiv, Ukraine. See more courses on the EHS Hip Calendar HERE.

A big welcome to our new EHS faces: full members Dr Bingol (Ankara, Turkiye), Dr Bruggermann (Uppsala, Sweden) and Dr Puolanto (Helsinki, Finland); young member Dr Pirato (Brindisi, Italy) and international member Dr Blankstein (Florida, USA). I hope to see you all at our congress in October.

Finally, still a few membership dues to come in (kindly click HERE or the PayPal button below). Thanks to all who have paid already.

    Dear EHS Members,

We step into the year of our 16th EHS Congress, taking place on 16-17th October. Our esteemed faculty has been invited and soon the speakers will be called upon to create their presentations. Our scientific programme has been collaboratively created with the EHS SciCom and boasts some excellent cross fires and round tables arranged within our core themes of Primary, Technology, Revision, Fracture & Complication and Preservation. As always we leave plenty of time for discussion.

We call on each and every EHS member to help make this congress a great success, so if you have contacts with the reps of European industry sponsors, please email me as soon as possible to make an introduction and ensure their company will have a prominent booth in Thessaloniki. Thank you.

  • December 2024

    Dear EHS Members,

An incredible year in orthopaedics culminated for me in an outstanding trip to Japan and Hong Kong. Both Orthopaedic Societies made me very welcome and I learnt a lot from the excellent surgeons I met and discussed the future of orthopaedics with.

Although USA is our esteemed Guest Nation at our 16th EHS Congress in Thessaloniki 16-17 October 2025, we will also honour Japan (EHS Guest Nation 2023) and hold a very nice session. The whole scientific programme looks great and is almost ready for circulation in the New Year.

Meanwhile, our Secretary General Prof Bondarenko was in USA attending the AAHKS meeting and touching base with our EHS International Members there.

We are delighted to announce the winners for our EHS Visiting Fellowship to Spain 2025: Dr Stikjn Bolink (Netherlands) & Dr Andrea D’Amelio (Italy). Competition was fierce and Prof Atilla, Chairman of our EHS EduCom, took a selection of candidates through to interview stage. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the other applicants – we encourage them to try again next time.

Please enjoy the report from our EHS Visiting Fellowship to Ireland HERE. Thanks to all our hosts and to the fellows themselves, Dr Ana Ferrao (Portugal) & Dr Juan Miguel Rodríguez Roiz (Spain) for this extensive and pleasurable report.

We welcome two new members, Prof Moussah Hamadouche from Paris, France, and Mr Michael Wyatt from Forster, Australia (originally a European), who is the new Editor in Chief of EHS’s journal, Hip International. We look forward to building a closer relationship with the journal through his appointment.

Prof Johannes Bastian, EHS EduCom Member from Switzerland, is Guest Editing a special issue in the Journal of Clinical Medicine on the Orthogeriatric Fracture Syndrome and Hip Periprosthetic Fractures, and invites our members to contribute HERE.

Our EHS Webinar Series 2024 “New frontiers & New Technologies in Hip Surgery” was successfully organised by Dr Oliver Marin-Pena and we thank him for his hard work, as well as all our expert speakers who gave their time and top talks on Hip Trauma Surgery (pelvic & acetabular fractures, proximal femoral fractures and periprosthetic fractures), Hip Arthroplasty and Primary THA, and included: Mr Syed Ahmed (UK), Dr Femi Ayeni (Canada), Prof Johannes Bastian (Switzerland), Prof Francesco Benazzo (Italy), Prof Stanislav Bondarenko (Ukraine), Dr Lewis PK Chan (Hong Kong), Prof Mustafa Citak (Germany), Dr Pedro Dantas (Portugal), Prof Jenaro Fernandez-Valencia, Prof Fares Haddad (UK), Mr Vikas Khanduja (UK), Prof Sebastien Lustig (France), Prof Maziar Mohaddes (Sweden), Dr Olga Pidgaiska (Ukraine/Germany), Prof Nicolas Reina (France), Dr Nicola Santori (Italy), Dr Ramesh Sen (India), Dr Simon Steppacher (Switzerland), Dr Marc Tey (Spain), Prof Eleftherios Tsiridis (Greece), Dr Stephan Vehmeijer (The Netherlands), Dr Michael Wettstein (Switzerland), Mr Matthew Wilson (UK) and Prof Luigi Zagra (Italy). Enjoy the free replays, available to all, HERE.

That just leaves me to wish you and your families a happy Christmas, with health and peace to all.

    Dear EHS Members,

EHS had a very active October, with great success across four national ortho congresses (Germany, Greece, Italy and Sweden), with another one coming up in Portugal next month! Great thanks to all our expert speakers – enjoy some nice photos below.

The MAST 11 in Thessaloniki proved an excellent test run of the seafront venue of our 16th EHS Congress 2025 (October 16-17th), for which the countdown has now truly begun. Together with the Hellenic Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, the MAST course attracted more than 1,500 registrations, with great support from the whole industry. The photo heading this newsletter shows the nice atmosphere in October here in Thessaloniki and we encourage you all to bring your families for a long weekend, as one Dutch member did this year.

Please all actively support and promote our next Free EHS Webinar or Hip Arthroplasty (Part II), on Thursday 28th November @ 18:00-19:30 (CET). Our EHS President Elect, Prof Fares Haddad (UK) & EHS SciCom Member, Dr Oliver Marin-Pena (Spain), will moderate. Of note will surely be the crossfire between EHS Members Prof Francesco Benazzo (Italy) and Mr Matt Wilson (UK) on “Revision THA: “Heavy” Metal or Bone Graft to fix acetabular bone defect?” I will give my “Update on aseptic revision THA in big femoral defects”, EHS Members Prof Sebastian Lustig (France) will speak on “How to manage unstable THA in 2024” and Prof Mustafa Citak (Germany) on “What’s new in septic revision THA”. The closing case discussion is by Prof Stanislav Bondarenko (Ukraine).

Candidate for EHS Presidency 2025-27: Prof Fares Haddad (UK)

It will be a great privilege to serve the European Hip Society as President and to help strengthen education, research, and communication in hip surgery in Europe.

I am excited by the opportunity to represent all European colleagues and to raise the profile of the EHS. I am a very active clinician with a high volume clinical practice of complex hip surgery encompassing young adult sports surgery all the way through to complex revisions. I have a big academic portfolio and a strong track record in leadership nationally in the UK and internationally. I have published and presented widely. I have strong contacts worldwide and will bring international recognition and key collaborations to the European Hip Society.

My goal would be to work with the Executive Committee and with National Reps and Ambassadors and Members of the Society to strengthen the scale and scope of local and collaborative offerings, and the communication and the interactions of the European Hip Society with its members. The European Hip Society needs to refresh and re-energise. We need to look at the committee structures and strengthen ExCom, EduCom and SciCom, and ensure that they are active, productive and delivering national involvement and input, and up-to-date education initiatives and appropriate research platforms and support. There are also funds that would allow us to launch new fellowships and forge close links between European colleagues for the future.

I also hope to raise the profile and reach of the European Hip Society worldwide. My involvement would open and energise international links to the benefit of our society and its members.

  • December 2022

    Dear Members,

The EHS co-organised Masterclass in Arthroplasty Surgery Thessaloniki (MAST) is running for the 9th consecutive year, from 16th – 18th December 2022, and is not to be missed.

As always, the MAST Founder and President, Prof Eleftherios Tsiridis (EHS President Elect), has invited his worldwide orthopaedic peers to bring their professional perspectives from Argentina, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UK, USA and of course Greece. USA alone will have teams from Stanford (California), Mayo Clinic (Minnesota), Rush (Chicago) and NYU Langone (New York).

This vibrant international faculty will offer invaluable insights into orthopaedic technicalities for joint arthroplasty and revision by presenting their best research data of the year and showing video surgeries on the topic “Advances in Arthroplasty – What’s new in complex adult reconstruction & new technologies?”.

As always at MAST, there is a competitive spirit. Last year we held the Ortho Olympics and this year, the esteemed faculty will battle it out in teams to win the “Aristotle MAST Award 2022” prize, with the most senior presenter of the winning team being named Visiting Professor by the Dean of the Aristotle University Medical School of Thessaloniki. We will also establish the inaugural “MAST “Endoxa” Consensus Report”, leading to a multi-centre publication.

Attendees can expect exciting presentations and big debates throughout Friday and Saturday, while Sunday will be dedicated to our popular hands on workshops. The course is hybrid and delegates can register to join us from anywhere. Last year we had guests from 27 countries and almost 400 delegates!

Additional hip courses to enter into your new diary for 2023 are:-

    • 10th February 2023: EHS Combined Course with SECCA (the Spanish Hip Society) in Madrid. All the details can be found here

Assoc Prof Stanislav Bondarenko, EHS Secretary General

Since taking a fellowship from EHS at the Center of Musculoskeletal Surgery at Charité – Virchow Klinikum Berlin, in the septic orthopaedic department, infection cases have become a part of my everyday activity. A multidisciplinary approach, combining the work of orthopeadic-trauma surgeons, infection disease specialists and psychologists shows excellent results in this category of complex patients. One stage procedures at PJI are becoming more and more common. From the first days of the war in Ukraine, the Center of Musculoskeletal Surgery at Charité – Virchow Klinikum Berlin has been accepting injured patients from Ukraine, both military and civilians. War injuries are accompanied by severe bone and soft tissues defects. But another problem we face are gram-negative multiresistent pathogens (3/4 MRGN) that were found in tissue samples. This has required the development of a new algorithm for the treatment (combination of antibiotics including its local application, multiple wounds revisions and metal fixators changes). It was a patient 41 y.o. female, physiotherapist with chronic knee PJI. In 12 years almost 50 operations; 4 times sepsis; multiple pathogens (Streptococci, Listeria, Klebsiella oxytoca, Proteus mirabilis, E. faecium , E. faecalis, E. coli, B. fragilis); opiate dependence. The multidisciplinary team established the diagnosis: “Munchausen syndrome”, a psychiatric problem, when the patient injected pathogens by herself in the knee joint to get attention to her personality.…those which were successfully cured after infection. It can be a case with a combination of severe bone loss from both the acetabulum and femur sides caused by metallosis (trunionosis) in combination with infection.I found this article “A systematic approach to CT evaluation of non-arthritic hip pain” from EFORT open reviews by Author(s): Andrew J Curley, Ethan R Ruh, Amisha Shah, Ashley E Disantis, April Krivoniak, Craig S Mauro, and Michael P McClincy Pages: 653–662.One of the tasks I deal with at present is learning the German language.Hip International Reviewers! Meanwhile, the report on the successful Osteotomies Around the Hip Hands On Cadaver Course in Lisbon, Portugal (with EHS patronage) is available HERE; thanks to our Nat Rep Dr Pedro Dantas. And earlier this week EHS had an interesting session at DKOU in Berlin on “Future Hip Surgery – Old Disease, New Treatment?” Moderators were EHS President, Prof Klaus Siebenrock & EHS Nat Rep for Germany, Prof Fritz Thorey:-

    • Open or arthroscop. FAI treatment: Recommendation, Prof Klaus Siebenrock (Bern)
    • Mini open anterior labrum transplantation, Prof Manuel Ribas Fernández (Barcelona)
    • Patient expectations in joint replacement, Prof Fritz Thorey (Heidelberg)
    • Resurfacing: Lessons and Findings in literature, Prof Klaus-Peter Günther (Dresden)
    • Minimally invasive hip surgery: evidence and future perspectives, Dr Florian Pohlig (Munich)
    • Robotics in THA – Future or just a short trend? Dr Marco Ezechieli (Salzkotten)

Now it is time to register for the MAST 9 Advanced Arthroplasty Surgery Course in Thessaloniki, Greece, an EHS-organised event (16-18th December 2022) presenting 80 international speakers, with MAKO and ROSA robotic systems on display for practical sessions, plus hands on Exeter Hip Course hip and knee revision practicals. Not to be missed.

We warmly welcome two new International EHS Members: Dr Kensuke Fukushima from Sagamihara in Japan, and Mr Raymond Crowe from Richmond, Australia. And finally, in our Q&A series below, we get to know our new EduCommer Dr Geert Meermans from Berchem, Belgium. Thanks to him.

Assoc Prof Stanislav Bondarenko, EHS Secretary General

    EHS Webinars

Who among us has not wished at one time or another to see a particularly interesting movie or interview again? This is also undoubtedly the case for the best lectures already presented at congresses or scientific days. And thus, here we are with our intention to offer our best presentations as a replay via EHS Webinars.

“European Hip Society aims to stay at the cutting edge of knowledge and to create a sound link between every surgeon interested in hip surgery, in Europe and beyond”… A life can obviously exist between each biennial EHS Congress. Hence, our EHS Webinars – to take place throughout the year – will establish a real scientific link within the Hip Scientific Community.

An “EHS Webinar Task Force” has been set up, bringing together several members of our three committees (Executive, Education and Scientific), including some members particularly involved in the promotion of best scientific presentations already given during our previous EHS symposia, scientific days and congresses.

Each member of this “Task Force” offers their best lectures (already given) on various subjects, creating a global thesaurus and allowing for a selection, classified by subjects or themes. Each month, a 60min webinar will propose three of these “top” lectures, which will be presented by their authors. In addition to the moderators, all participants connected remotely will be able to debate via the “usual chat”… Replays will also be available!

Eight EHS Webinars per year will be held in partnership with MO Journal, and of course, all details and additional information will be provided through our EHS website and this Newsletter.

“Bringing Orthopaedic Hip Surgeons Together”… The kick-off is January 2023… See you there!!!In my current practice as a hip surgeon, I see mostly patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and young(er) patients with femoroacetabular impingement. We also treat a lot of elderly patients with proximal femoral fractures and see more and more patients with periprosthetic fractures. The elderly mother of one of our secretary’s was scheduled for a cup revision, but intraoperatively the 26mm femoral head could not be removed from the massive cementless stem. I ended up doing a full revision and after removal of the stem there was an intraoperative femoral fracture in osteopenic bone. Fortunately, she’s recovered very well in the meantime.Despite the fact that in our country relatively little large head metal-on-metal implants have been used, these are always very difficult in case of a massive soft tissue reaction. I still remember one patient (from St Elsewhere) with a massive soft tissue lesion, abductor weakness and recurrent dislocations. A colleague and I did his revision with resection of this massive cystic lesion. Unfortunately, his abductors were gone and he never regained his normal function.Every happy patient is very rewarding, but one that comes to mind is a 19-year young woman with bilateral osteoarthritis due to juvenile rheumatoid arthritis coming in to my office in a wheelchair. Because of her young age, she couldn’t find someone who’d be willing to help her. She has bilateral THA for more than 10 years now, has three children and sends me a postcard every year with a photo of their family on one of their hiking holidays during the summertime. This always reminds me that what we do can really have an impact on people’s quality of life.It is always so frustrating when a patient comes to visit you, but after clinical examination and additional testing you can’t find a good explanation for their current symptoms.I’ve had the pleasure to be in touch with [EHS Member] George Grammatopoulos and Moritz Innmann for a couple of years, and their recent work on spinopelvic characteristics has had a fundamental impact on our knowledge on this difficult topic. It took me a couple of readings to grasp their concept, but this will have a major impact on our daily practice as hip surgeons.

Enjoy below our Q&A series – getting to know our new committee members – where we introduce Prof Filippo Randelli (Italy) and Dr Walter van der Weegen (The Netherlands), both of the EHS SciCom. Thanks gentlemen.

Assoc Prof Stanislav Bondarenko, EHS Secretary General

The most common cases I see are hip arthritic patients, then FAI-DDH patients, strictly followed by revision cases and trauma (complex and nonunion or malunion).I can’t forget her. A 60-year old lady who had already undergone a series of surgeries for a DDH starting with a Schanz osteotomy followed by a total hip replacement and then two revisions. She developed a huge aggressive and unexplained pseudotumor, probably due to bleeding microaneurysms. She had two catheter embolizations before I could reoperate her in a very complicated setting of bone and soft tissue loss.Difficult to say. Maybe the case of an old lady who sustained a pelvic fracture over an already revised total hip, which was also loosened by the complex fracture. It was very difficult to fix and replace it at the same time from inside and outside the pelvis, in a very poor bone stock.I think the case of a young Libyan boy, 15, who had jumped on a mine that devastated his legs and feet. It was very difficult to treat. Many staged plastic and orthopaedic surgeries with pending amputations that fortunately never happened.A young lady with hip pain and instability. I mean soft tissue instability. Hypermobility. Those are the most difficult cases to treat in my opinion. Surgery is often not even the best solution and any effort may result in a bad result. The patient is often unhappy, and us too.I am not sure which was the most interesting article I have read this year. I can say that the article from Charles Murray Lawrie in Bone and Joint Journal 2021 on modular dual mobility in young active patients was quite reassuring for my practice.I try to spend time with my beloved family as much as possible. I haven’t been very present for years. Our wonderful work can be sometimes suffocating for us and for our loved ones. I’m trying to reverse course. I go sailing with them and travelling around. Unfortunately, we all love good food. Not good for the diet.I mostly read two types of books. Detective crime novels, lately Jo Nesbø ones, or adventure/historical books about Pole explorations. It is not coincidence that I spent two weeks at Svalbard Islands last summer. A kind of pathological obsession. Next goal? The South Pole.I work in the Anna hospital in Geldrop, the Netherlands.I am the research director of the department of Orthopaedic Surgery. I started this position after completing my academic training as a movement scientist, leaving my former work as physiotherapist. No doubt getting my PhD! Under the supervision of Prof Rob Nelissen I finished my PhD (2014) on soft tissue reactions following metal-on-metal hip resurfacing surgery. A very rewarding journey in which we discovered that not all pseudotumors are in immediate need of revision surgery and that for specific cases a wait and see policy is the best option.Hip pathology and treatment for sure! But where in my early research years (a long time ago!) my research was much more on PE wear and hip implant survival, I have now also taken up an interest in digital health care, including artificial intelligence. But of course this is also centred around patients with hip disease. Another interest is fast-track surgery, with research projects on optimization of both the surgical procedures as well as the post operative recovery.Since my research is centred around hip pathology, both the bi-annual EHS meetings and the Hip International journal are my favourite means of sharing our research results. I am also proud to be a member of the EHS Scientific Committee! For example colleagues are working on fracture recognition on x-rays. My work however makes use of more standard machine learning techniques on regular datasets holding data from hundreds (now getting into the thousands) of patients who completed a digital history taking form on hip pathology. We then try to predict diagnoses and treatment for these patients. A very exiting new field of AI application.Besides trail running, I am trying to learn how to play the guitar. Unfortunately I have to make up my limited lack of talent for this with sheer perseverance.Hip International Reviewers! We want reviewers from EHS membership. Dear Members,

We are pleased to publish the Minutes from the EHS Annual General Assembly, which took place in Lisbon during the EFORT congress: HERE. Thanks to all who attended.

Our EduCom Member, Prof Mattia Loppini, is Guest Editor of the JCM Special Issue on “Clinical Management and Outcome of Periprosthetic Fracture”. We hope many of you will submit papers.

A year has passed since our EHS 14th Congress in Lille. Our EHS Past President, Dr Jean-Alain Epinette, was determined at least some of us could meet face to face, to keep alive The Spirit of EHS – despite the pandemic causing a year’s delay to the event, as well as no end of unforeseen problems. But we made it and give a huge thanks to all who came – both in person and digitally. The delegate satisfaction rate from our feedback was 92%! If you haven’t already, please read the report HERE and enjoy the great photos.

Now of course we look forward greatly to our EHS 15th Congress in Bern in October 2023, for which preparations are under way. Prof Siebenrock is very excited to welcome everyone to his beautiful home town.

The EHS Visiting Fellowship (postponed due to the pandemic) will take place next month in Portugal. Thanks to Dr Dantas, our EHS Nat Rep, for organising a super itinerary and to his participating colleagues Prof Rego, Dr Tinoco and Dr Melo. We look forward to reading the report of our two fellows Dr Adrian Cassar-Gheiti (Ireland) and Dr Iker Uriarte (Spain) in the New Year. (For previous reports from our EHS Fellowships, please click HERE.)

Thanks everyone and have a good autumn.

Meanwhile, the immediate Past President of EHS, Dr Jean-Alain Epinette and the Chairmen of our EHS EduCom and EHS SciCom, Prof Gosta Ullmark from Sweden and Prof Luigi Zagra from Italy, (both Past Presidents of EHS,) are meeting with the EHS ExCom this week to launch the EHS Webinar project that was born during the EFORT Congress in Lisbon and will be presented to you all soon. Watch this space.

Below, the Q&A series introduces Prof Johannes Bastian from Switzerland this month, who joined the EHS EduCom recently. Thanks to him. Please scroll below to read.

Happy Summer Everyone. In my opinion there is no «most common» case in our clinic, in Bern hip surgery includes elective and trauma cases and the spectrum is very broad ranging from even pediatric hips, hip preserving surgery, primary (complex) and revision THA (including 3D printed implants), periprosthetic fractures, failed surgeries to pelvic and acetabular fractures. As I focus on revisions and trauma (especially in older patients) I am frequently exposed to acetabular fractures which I manage mostly by the “Pararectus” approach (from anterior) with an osteosynthesis. There was a polytrauma call with a young patient in extremis suffering from bilateral traumatic hip dislocations (R: posterior, L: pubica) with traumatic amputation of both lower legs. The “Luxatio pubica” was severely displaced with the greater trochanter riding cranially on the symphysis and the neck of femur was entrapped within iliofemoral and pubofemoral ligaments so that even open reduction was a challenge on done together with my vascular surgery colleagues.Fixation of complex acetabular fractures (ABC) by means of a combination (simultaneous, floppy positioning) of anterior (Pararectus) and posterior (surgical hip dislocation) approaches or to achieve correct leg length and to handle soft-tissues in complex primary THA such as in Crowe 4 DDH or in Perthes or in cerebral palsy patients is challenging and interesting.Successful Revision THA in PJI in a revision THA complicated with periprosthetic fractures after multiple previous surgeries in a very friendly older lady.Surgery in non-compliant patients. There are many challenges in THA currently (e.g. spinopelvic balance and stability of THA) and interesting articles, however the use of  “Artificial intelligence for distinguishment of hammering sound in total hip arthroplasty (Sci Rep. 2022 Jun 14;12(1):9826)” was great fun to read.To cut the grass at home and gardening. We will visit Crete for 2nd time this year, cannot wait to enjoy traditional Greek food.EHS Members are kindly reminded to pay their 2022 membership fees please. Thank you very much to all involved.

Great to see you all in Lisbon at the EFORT Congress, where we ran our various committee meetings face to face, as well as welcomed many members to our booth. Thanks to all who visited. Our profession faces many changes and EFORT asks all our members to please complete their MDR survey by clicking HERE or by scrolling down to the QR code.

Plenty to read this summer, as our brief reports are out now from EFORT congress as well as two previous EHS-involved courses:-

Prof Plamen Kinov (EHS SciCom) who organised the BOTA event in Varna also took the time to feature in our Q&A series below. Meanwhile, we welcome a new member from Bulgaria: Dr Dencho Kavaldjiev (pictured here) and are happy to announce the resumption of the EHS Visiting Fellowship (postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic) for Dr Adrian Cassar-Gheiti and Dr Iker Uriarte, who will go to Portugal in October 2022. Thanks to Dr Dantas, Prof Rego, Dr Tinoco and Dr Melo for the excellent itinerary.

Wish everyone a good summertime. In my department, primary hip replacement is the most common surgery. In the outpatient clinic – the most common case is a patient with knee pain, usually a young woman. We treat initial knee arthritis conservatively, results are usually good. Most difficult cases to treat in my practice are infections. The most difficult and interesting case of this year was a young 24-year-old male with 27 previous hip surgeries for periprosthetic hip infection. After being for 3 years on different antibiotics we isolated multiresistant Providentia stuartii with no susceptibility to any of the available antibiotics in Bulgaria. With team approach and good collaboration, and with a special protocol consulted by the EHS member Dr Rihard Trebse from Valdotra, Slovenia, we were able to successfully solve the case with the antibiotics we have on disposal in Bulgaria.I treat a lot of hip and knee revisions. The load of surgeries and their complexity increases through the years. Very often, almost every month I have a case that I say this is one of the most difficult cases I have ever done.My mission is helping others, alleviating pain, restoring motion. Every case in my practice is deeply rewarding as the reason for being a physician is to help others.  In every case, in every treatment, I celebrate healing with the patient.Case with clinical evidence for infection and without isolated microorganism in an immunocompromised host. Those are the cases I could not promise successful treatment to the patient.

The article by Luigi Zagra et al: “Current concepts in hip–spine relationships: making them practical for total hip arthroplasty“ in EFORT Open Reviews (2021) 7, 59–69 is an important overview of the hip–spine relationship and its implications for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty.

I would like to highly recommend the current international guidelines in THA VTE prophylaxis published a month ago in JBJS. I think this important development and will change our approach to VTE prophylaxis after orthopaedic surgery.

I am very fond of sports, do running, biking and mounting hiking. Enjoy very much life in the countryside and travel a lot.The book I am currently reading is The Art of Strategy by Avinash K Dixit and Barry J Nalebuff – practical insights and reading enjoyment helping to see the world from different perspective.EHS Members are kindly reminded to pay their 2022 membership fees please. This matter is so important that numerous guidelines have been published around the globe related to this issue. Though very useful, the guidelines have been criticized on many fronts. Majority of the guidelines have a narrow focus, covering knee and hip arthroplasty mostly. Others may have focused on level 1 studies only, which are mostly conducted by pharmaceutical companies as part of obtaining approval for the drug, thus introducing a bias. Majority of the guidelines do not take into account the importance of race, geography, and other factors that may influence the choice of a VTE prophylactic agent. An important criticism of the current guidelines is that they overlook the importance of complications, such as bleeding and wound related complications, that can arise as a result of administration of VTE prophylaxis agents.ICM has produced previous guidelines related to orthopedic infections and even management of orthopedic patients during the COVID pandemic. Recognizing the need for a global guidelines, taking into account all the current issues, the ICM gathered almost 600 experts from 68 countries to create a document related to VTE prevention following orthopedic procedures. The delegates, representing 135 orthopedic, hematology, cardiology, anesthesia, internal medicine, vascular medicine, and other specialties worked tirelessly over a 12 month period to produce a monumental document that stands to improve the care of our patients. The document is created using the strict Delphi process and after the review of ALL relevant literature. The “guidelines” created covers ALL subspecialties in orthopedics including foot and ankle, hand, hip and knee, oncology, pediatrics, shoulder and elbow, spine, sports, and trauma. The immense effort and energy that was invested to create this comprehensive document should serve the orthopaedic patients in the years to come. We are grateful to the shrewd and insightful engagement of colleagues from anesthesia, cardiology, hematology, vascular medicine, and other fields. Their selfless contributions will never be forgotten.

  • May 2022

EHS will hold its GA at EFORT in Lisbon on Wednesday 22nd June @ 18:30-19:30

& its speciality session “Revision Hips” on Friday 24th June @ 8-9am. See you at both events. Also, don’t forget to contribute to the JCM Special Issue: “Advances in adult Hip and Knee Surgery” (more info HERE) & save the date for these upcoming courses EHS is collaborating in:

More info can be found below on the Italian event from Dr Nicola Santori, our Nat Rep for Italy – thanks to him. There is also a German-language hip course organised by Profs Günther, Siebenrock & Chiar on 16th & 17th June 2022 in Dresden, including hands on workshops. Click for the programme HERE.

Meanwhile, below is a new feature, “Hip case Q&A”, hopefully a nice way to get to know our committee members a bit better. Thanks to our first pair, Oliver Marín-Peña of the SciCom and Mattia Loppini of the EduCom. And finally, please scroll down to welcome all our new members to EHS.OMP: Young active patients with groin pain is the standard case but painful THA. Groin pain in young adult usually could be orientated to hip preserving surgery (PAO, hip arthroscopy, safe surgical dislocation or mini anterior approach) or THA depending on joint degeneration. Painful THA usually are managed with THA revision or rarely arthroscopic procedures

ML: Primary total hip replacementOMP: Regarding THA revision, cases of severe bone defect at acetabular with pelvic discontinuity. Regarding Hip preserving surgery, an interesting case of massive subspace impingement that we manage with mini-anterior approach, it was published in JHPS (https://doi.org/10.1093/jhps/hnab020)

ML: Primary total hip replacement in a middle age lady with a Crowe grade III hip dysplasiaOMP: THA revision femoral and acetabular side with pelvic discontinuity in a young 43 years old patient. Need to be revised for instability and 3 years later get infected, never forget it!!

ML: Acetabular ri-revision with a Paprosky type III defect managed with a double cup techniqueOMP: Professional athlete with Femoracetabular Impingement that we did an arthroscopic correction and she finally was silver medal at Olympic Games. Very grateful to help these young professional sport patients to meet their goals

ML: The management of an old lady with recurrent hip dislocations and three previous surgeries treated with an acetabular revision with a constrained cupOMP: THA infection cases and THA instability cases are the most challenging cases with sometimes unpredictable results

ML: Complex acetabular revisions such as cases with Paprosky defects type III and IVOMP: Many interesting articles this year 2022… I would mention several!! I have to choose one, I would choose uninteresting article from Luigi Zagra in EFORT Open Reviews, titled “Current concepts in hip–spine relationships: making them practical for total hip arthroplasty“. This is a difficult topic and this article clarifies many complex concepts to understand this common problem.

Also, I would recommend the current international guidelines in THA VTE prophylaxis published a few weeks ago at JBJS. I think it will change our current approach to this important issue

ML: Preoperative spinopelvic hypermobility resolves following total hip arthroplasty. Sculco PK, Windsor EN, Jerabek SA, Mayman DJ, Elbuluk A, Buckland AJ, Vigdorchik JM. Bone Joint J 2021 Dec

OMP: Share with my family and friends as much time as possible. A small defect….. Football fan!!!

ML: I really like trekking and climbing in the summer and skiing in the winterOMP: This year I’ll stay in Spain, I have planned to visit different places at North, East and South Spanish Coast

ML: I am going to seaside with my family in Tuscany

  • April 2022

In this Newsletter, EHS President Prof Siebenrock & EHS Member Dr Ahmad invite our members to contribute to the JCM Special Issue: “Advances in adult Hip and Knee Surgery”. Please read the full invitation HERE.

Meanwhile, our Past President, Dr Jean-Alain Epinette, comments on and draws brief conclusions following EFORT’s webinar in January that tackled the issue of Cobalt in Orthopaedic Implants, titled: “Relevance of Metal Carcinogenicity to Orthopedics: Controversies and Concerns”. Thank you to him for this contribution (below) an a hot topic affecting our community and thank you to EFORT President Li Felländer-Tsai and Immediate Past EFORT President Klaus-Peter Gunther for having approved the text.

Please save the date for two upcoming hip courses that EHS is collaborating in:

    • 27th May 2022 Global Experts Hip Symposium EHS & Cleveland Clinic London (virtual event)
    • 11th November 2022 EHS – SIDA – SIOT Conjoined symposium on THR for secondary arthritis & hip arthroscopy (in Rome)

And finally, below, we welcome new members to EHS.in patients after joint replacement. Cobalt can be responsible for local toxicity (metallosis, hypersensitivity reaction, benign tumor) or systemic (cardiomyopathy, polycythemia, hypothyroidism, neurological disorders). The question of potential carcinogenicity for hip or mainly knee prostheses is not new, since it has been regularly mentioned for more than 10 years in scientific communications, but also in the “general public” press…Apart from some studies [1-2], we can refer to the work published in the British Medical Journal in 2012, allowing the conclusion that “patients with metal-on-metal hip prosthesis do not present an increased risk of cancer, any more than the general population, in the 7 years that follow their implantation [3].  In 2016, the answer to the question “are cobalt hip prostheses dangerous?” published by the Liège toxicology department, confirmed the possibility of local toxicity, but the carcinogenic risk is not significantly different from that of the general population [4]. Regarding the risk of carcinogenesis, the Finnish registry in 2014 had not objectified an increased risk of cancer in 10,000 patients with a Metal-On-Metal prosthesis followed for an average of 4.6 years [5]. In fact, already in 1992, the 50-year clinical experience and history of the use of cobalt-chromium as an implant material in orthopedics, dentistry, and plastic surgery more than adequately establishes its safety and effectiveness, following comprehensive review literature on the subject… [6]The rumor of a complete ban on these suddenly “dangerous” prostheses has recently stirred our orthopedic community… A joint MedTech Europe and EFORT report, published on August 14, 2018, was devoted to this issue of Cobalt in orthopedic implants (Joint Statement of EFORT and MedTech Europe’s Orthopedic Sector Group), and detailed the work of the European Commission within the framework of the new regulations for implantable devices (MDR-Medical Devices Regulation), the aim of which was both to inform any user that such a medical device contained a CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic for reproduction), but also to ensure that the manufacturer has assessed any risk posed by such a substance. [7] Thus, as of October 1, 2021, cobalt is classified as a substance: carcinogen 1B, mutagen 2, toxic for reproduction 1B, pursuant to delegated regulation 2020/217 of the European Commission.Nevertheless, in the application of European regulation 2017/745 relating to medical devices, devices containing cobalt in a concentration greater than 0.1% by mass fraction (m/m) must now meet the new safety and performance requirements established in Annex I, Chapter II, point 10.4. The manufacturers of a medical device that contains cobalt must therefore, from October 1, 2021: (1) justify the use of cobalt; this can be done for example by explaining why another material cannot replace it; (2) signal the presence of cobalt by specific labeling on the MD; (3) provide a notice informing of the residual risks.confirm that the amount of cobalt released from cobalt-chromium alloys in orthopedic implants is only 1/25 of the exposure needed to detect any systemic effects in patients. Detailed analyzes of long-term published epidemiological studies and meta-analyses on large groups of patients covering more than 60 years of clinical use in orthopedics demonstrate no causal relationship between cobalt chromium or stainless-steel implants and the effects carcinogenic. The new legal obligation to label orthopedic implants containing cobalt does not change this. Demonstration of implant safety is an intrinsic prerequisite for obtaining regulatory approval and placing these implants on the European market [8].for all of us, under the title “Relevance of Metal Carcinogenicity for Orthopedics: Controversies and Concerns”. . The themes covered allow us to take stock of the most recent data on the different topics covered: (1)Biochemical/Toxicological Background about Potential Carcinogenicity of Metals; (2) General Concern Regarding Cobalt in Surroundings and Initiatives to Overcome it; (3)Carcinogenic Assessment of Cobalt Containing Alloys in Medical Devices and (4)What is the Role of Registry Studies to Detect Potential Carcinogenic Hazards?… The REPLAY of this EFORT Webinar, held on 31 January 2022 is available online, DON’T MISS IT!

    LETTER TO OUR UKRAINIAN FRIENDS

Dear Friends and Colleagues of our EHS,

We are scientists, but above all doctors, whose vocation is to treat and protect… The world of sport, entertainment, culture, or simply civil society has shown us the way by condemning this massacre in Ukraine and paying tribute to the courage and spirit of sacrifice of all the Ukrainian people for their homeland. We cannot stay away from what should be our duty to help, and our voice, like all other voices of a free world, does matter!

Therefore, we must support an end to this blood-shedding war, condemning this act of aggression and calling for peace!

It is not a question of interfering in political matters, and we have of course no animosity towards the Russian people or any other citizen there, simply it is not a question as human beings of accepting that any political leader takes responsibility for killing people, slaughtering cities, and shedding innocent blood.

On behalf of the Executive Committee of the European Hip Society, we officially wish to support at our level all the efforts of peace and support for the Ukrainian people.

Dear Colleagues and Friends, our dearest wishes are for you, your families, and all your compatriots in this terrible ordeal,

    President, Prof Klaus Siebenrock

    President Elect, Prof Eleftherios Tsiridis

    Past President, Dr Jean-Alain Epinette

    Secretary General, Prof Stansilav Bondarneko

    Treasurer, Prof Martin Thaler

    SciCom Chairman, Prof Luigi Zagra

    EduCom Chairman, Prof Gosta Ullmark
